Production notes
Although this work is described as a lithograph in Ethel Carrick exhibitions (1933, 1934, 1938 and 1942) all impressions I have seen are collotypes (a photomechanical printing process that can print continuous tone ). The process can be applied to stones, metal or glass plates. The images I have examined have a distinct plate-mark and under magnification the reticulated pattern of the gelatin is clearly visible. All are printed on chine collé.
Subject description
A view of Place St. Medard in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, looking from the corner of rue Edouard Quenu across the square towards the termination of Rue Mouffetard (the oldest street in Paris) on the left and the ancient Roman Catholic church of Saint-Medard on the right. The Place St. Medard is the venue for a small market outside the church.
