Production notes

This series was a collaborative work by Baldessin and Tillers. Baldessin produced the upper plate in each print and Tillers the lower plate. The artists worked on a pair of companion plates for the first print in the series when they were both living in Paris. When Tillers moved to Vence, in the south of France, the artists continued to work independently on their plates mailing them to each other. The plates were then printed in Nice. (Ref: Dianne Beevers 'George Baldessin 1939-1978' and 'According to Des Esseintes' in 'Artemis' (Newcastle Region Art Gallery) 1978, pp.3-11) 'The George Baldessin and Imants Tillers collaborative prints, 'According to des Esseintes' 1976, have been documented (in numerous sources) as including photo-etching. Imants said that he didn’t do any photo-etching and just worked in a very meticulous way. Jennifer Slatyer also spoke with Tess (George Baldessin’s widow) who said they had always assumed that Imants was the one doing the photo-etching. According to Imants and Tess it should definitely be: etching and aquatint." (Ref: email from Deborah Hart 18/5/06 file 98/0334 and 96/0269)
