printed in 'The Torch' : Published annually by the Adelaide Teachers’ College. Vol. XXI, December, 1941. Adelaide : Printed at The Hassell Press, 1941, page 19. The linocut appears opposite the poem 'Evening' by Colin Thiele. The first stanza reads:

'Jagged edges of the black clouds lie
Shot across the dark sky
Like wild spear shafts flung
Defiant from a sun
Slowly dying.
Through the split storm clouds hung
Tatted ending of a worn-out day-
Flashed through the narrow light
Of the last ray
The wild-duck's arrow flight
Hurtles- a dark spear speeding
To the hash rasp
Of its swift mate crosswise flying
Into the night.'.
