Subject description

The site of Manton's department store has housed several influential Melbourne businesses. One of Melbourne's first entertainment venues, the Theatre Royal, was established there in 1855. The theatre was demolished in 1934 and Manton's built a modern six-storey art deco building, which was completed in 1937. In 1955, GJ Coles & Co took over the store and it became Coles' Number-One Variety Store. Today the building is home to Target, but it is thought the original facade of Manton's is behind the exterior cladding. [SLV, 2010]
