There is a clean, fresh show, Melbourne Prints, at the Royal S.A. Society of Arts which gives a good idea of the delectable variety to be obtained from the media of the graphic arts. Lesbia Thorpe creates simple illustrations, bold and decorative, using the forms of nature as articles of design. Robert Grieve, on the other hand, especially in his black and white work, evades any clear statement of nature in order to take up a hint and develop it into a suggestion of character isolated in space. His cat and owl are particularly good. Barbara Brash lays on color with the notable effect in the show, in separate blocks in “Lighthouse” and in gauzy veils in "Peacock". The general standard standard of all the work is highly competent and pleasant, although Noel Counihan while certainly competent, is too blatantly social-realist.

It was fitting that the show was opened by Paul Beadle, Principal of the SA School of Arts, as he has done a great deal to revive interest in print-making in S.A. The School’s new course in graphic art is in the extremely capable hands of Udo Sellbach, who had a notable exhibition some time ago in Adelaide, and already there are signs of first-rate work emerging from such young artists as Barbara Hanrahan.
