Tom Gleghorn

Born in Thornley, England in 1925, Tom Gleghorn arrived in Newcastle, NSW in 1928. With no formal training but with some instruction from William Dobell, he began painting at the age of 24, exhibiting paintings in Sydney from 1954 onwards. Between 1957 and 1973 he won over 30 major as well as many smaller art awards. He held about 34 solo exhibitions from 1959 to 1992, as well as participating in numerous group exhibitions.

Chiefly a painter, Gleghorn made the occasional linocuts, self-taught, from 1960 onwards. While in Europe on the Helena Rubinstein travelling scholarship, he visited the Curwen Press and printed a series of ten lithographs at the Birgot Skiold Print Studio, London, 1963. He was included in the Tokyo Print Biennale in 1960.

He worked as artist designer for Grace Bros, then Farmers, Sydney; as director of Blaxland Galleries, Sydney from 1958 to 1960; teaching at the National Art School, Sydney in 1960; Head of the Canberra Art School from 1968 to 1969; Lecturer in Art, Bedford Park Teachers College, Adelaide, from 1969 and senior lecturer there from 1973.

From 1958, Gleghorn won many art prizes. His works are represented in the National Gallery of Australia, most state and many regional galleries; many corporate collections including IBM, ICI, State Bank, Perth, Sydney, London and Hong Kong.
