JOSEPH FORBES.--Mr. Nicholas, who has taken the management of Mr Barlow's business, in Bridge-street, has just published a lithographic engraving, which purports to be a portrait, taken from life, of Joseph Forbes, the unfortunate young man who was rescued some time ago from Timor Laut. To our mind the engraving presents more the appearance of a dead woman than a living captive, notwithstanding the spear and the fish, the armlets and anklets, the eardrops and the hair. We had not an opportunity of seeing Forbes after he had sojourned in the Benevolent Asylum, but from what we have heard, we should think the engraving exaggerated, and we are very sure that it has not the slightest similitude to the Joseph Forbes we saw the morning that he arrived in Sydney with Captain Watson. At the same time, we must acknowledge, that there is some show of talent in this as well as other Sketches lately published, but it is crude, and wants study and observation.[The Colonist, 3 November 1840, page 3].
