Subject description
A portrait of Afro-Caribbean John Parry (1819-1867), known in England for his feats in pedestrianism and prize-fighting who boxed under the name of Perry the Black. Charged for passing forged bank notes he was transported to Australia in 1848. In the colony he quickly became renowned for his pugilist prowess.
