Biography
The Redfern Gallery had strong connections with Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Rex Nan Kivell (1898-1977), born in Aotearoa New Zealand, joined the gallery in 1925 and became managing-director in 1931. He continued his association with the gallery until his death. Australian born Harry Tatlock Miller (1913-1989) was director of Redfern Gallery from 1949-82, and chairman from 1965 until he retired in 1982.
Over the years the gallery supported many Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand artists. The gallery was the prime venue for the exhibition of contemporary prints, both English and European. Exhibitions were frequently toured overseas, including to Australasia.
Nan Kivell sold his important collection of historical works of the Australasian region to the National Library of Australia. He also gave some ... contemporary wood-engravings, lithographs and linocuts to Aotearoa New Zealand public collections in 1953. Miller established the Loudon Sainthill Fellowship Australian for designers in theatre, ballet, or opera to travel overseas and develop their creative practice.
