Abstract

Nestled on Melville Island’s north west coast facing Bathurst Island and the Timor Sea is Pirlangimpi, a small community with a population of about 360 Tiwi people and home to the Munupi Arts & Crafts Association.

Munupi artists were the first Indigenous artists in Australia to focus on printmaking as a core activity. Manupi Editions reflects this lineage with prints spanning two decades of activity.

Tiwi art informs us about Tiwi life and culture. Imagery is comprised of contemporary and traditional elements which celebrate Tiwi ceremony, Dreamtime stories and contemporary community life such as bush hunting, fishing, travel and more recently – sport. Designs and patterning are chiefly based on ‘jilamara’ or traditional body painting. [blurb]
