Abstract
Mid-Century "Gallery A" prints, from the estate of Cherelle Hutchinson.
Cherelle was married to Max Hutchinson, founder of the avant-garde Gallery A, and most famous for selling Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles to the Australian Government in 1973. Terry Ingram of the Financial Review broke the story at the time.
Gallery A first opened in Hutchinson's furniture and industrial design showroom in Flinders Lane, Melbourne in 1959 before moving to South Yarra in 1962. In 1964 he expanded, opening galleries in Sydney, Canberra and New York in 1968.
Artists included in this rare collection of works from the 1960s are John Stringer, Norma Redpath, Tom Gleghorn, Bruce Petty, Alan Riddell, Ruth Faerber, Louis James, Tony Coleing, Willian Rose, Peter Blake, David Gillison, David Warren, and Francis Woolley. They are all represented in public collections.
