Abstract

Most of the etchings in this selection were done on journeys. The voyage on the re-supply ship to Mawson in Antarctica remains a journey that became the artist’s central theme for a number of years. Included are etchings of his six years in Japan, where he taught at the same art school at which he studied 40 years ago. Studies of crab claws and shells collected on beaches in Australia and observations on a journey to Venice are other parts of this selection. The etchings were done in the studio and on the road, “a record and celebration of what moved me there and then, and an attempt top keep the memories alive before their contours blur and the colours fade.”
