Abstract

Printmaking is often referred to as the democratic medium. It is an inexpensive and accessible art form that can be readily mass produced, therefore printmaking is often embraced by artists who are seeking direct social engagement.

Techniques of Persuasion: Second Strike, is a thought provoking exhibition that explores political dissent and debate from Australian printmakers. Represented here is a historical lineage of politically active artists from the late 1940’s up to present day using varied style and techniques within the printmaking medium to express strongly held beliefs, commitments and to engage community discussion. Printmakers include Noel Counihan, Bea Maddock, Tony Albert, Emily Floyd, Judy Watson and Alison Alder.

Curated by Drew Halyday from the Galleries own Margaret Carnegie Print Collection this exhibition follows the 2014 exhibition Techniques of Persuasion: Politics in Print. It has now been expanded to include recent acquisitions. [Wagga Wagga Art Gallery media].
