Biography

Born Leo Byrne, he began to use the name Dominic Leon by the late 1920s. An associate of James Flett, Roy Dalgarno and Eric Thake, he printed Thake’s two-colour linocut ‘Reurned Empty’, in 1929. He experimented in relief prints and etchings and exhibited colour linocuts with ‘The Embryos’ at the Little Gallery in Melbourne in 1930. A member of the Young Communist League and the Workers’ Art Club, he produced a colour linocut for the cover of the radical Melbourne magazine Stream in September 1931. His colour prints were described by Harold Herbert as 'brilliant'. He died in a traffic accident in 1932 aged 29 years. At the time of his death his address was given as 125 Collins Street, Melbourne.
