Biography
BIMA WEAR
The Tiwi people have been involved with an enterprise called Bima Wear, on Bathurst Island since 1969. The Catholic Nuns began a clothing workshop in 1969 when Sister Eucharia began sewing lessons for the Aboriginal women. Madeleine Clear (nee Drenth) a West Australian art teacher started teaching woodblock and silkscreen printing at the Bathurst Island Mission. Their screen print designs have progressed from placement to allover fabric printing on wall hangings, dress lengths, tablecloths, mats etc. Sister Eucharia retired in 1986. Marie McMahon spent three months in 1988 teaching them new techniques with screen printing to expand the business. By 1989, they were planning on hiring a garment designer to help cater to a wider market.
