MR. NAPIER WALLER RETURNS
Mosaic and Stained Glass Work.
A desire to stimulate interest in mosaic In Australia was expected by Mr. Napier Waller, who, with Mrs. Waller, returned to Melbourne yesterday by the Orient liner Oronsay. Mr. Waller, whose mural paintings, notably in the Melbourne Town Hall and at the National Gallery;-, have earned distinction, has been visiting England, France, and Italy. He has given special attention to design and craftsmanship in stained glass, and for this purpose be spent u greater portion of his time in the cathedrals of the countries he visited. The most recent type of electric furnace for firing and annealing stained glass has been brought to Australia by, Mr. Waller, who said that he intended to build a new studio in Melbourne for the work. The periods in art which bad attracted him most, he said, were that from the 4th century to the 13th century in France, and the medieval era-from the 12th century to the 13th century-in Italy. The work of the Renaissance painters he had found to be disappointing so far as his personal appreciation was concerned. He had centered much of his attention on the early phases of art when it was not known as such,, but was rather a craft. In Italy mosaic appealed to him because he believed that its application in modern art should be of very much greater value than it is.
