Abstract

Dian Darmansjah was born in Biloela in Central Queensland in 1973.

Since graduating with a BA(Visual Arts) from the Queensland University of Technology in 1994, Dian has worked in a variety of educational institutions and businesses teaching and collaborating with artists in a variety of printmaking mediums.

Initially, Dian was employed as technician in the QUT printmaking studio for a number of years. In 1998/99, Dian was accepted into the printer-training program at the prestigious Tamarind School of Lithography in New Mexico, USA.
Following his study in America, Dian returned to Brisbane where he worked for both QUT and Griffith University in their printmaking departments. Feeling the need for something more, he packed up his family and moved to Darwin in 2000 to take up a temporary position at the Northern Territory University. What was to be a one-year change ended up being six years spent working with students and professional artists at the Northern Territory University, and their professional print workshop, Northern Editions. Dian accepted the position of Workshop Manager of Northern Editions in 2003 and fulfilled this position until leaving Darwin in 2006. During this time at Northern Editions, Dian had the pleasure of working with some of the great indigenous artists from art centers such as Balgo, Jirrawun, Maningrida, and the Tiwi Islands.
In 2006, Dian moved back to Queensland and opened his own print workshop, Firebox Print Studio on the Sunshine Coast. Through this business, Dian worked on projects with Bindi Arts, Jonathon Jones and Warringarri Artists.

2009 was spent in Cairns, setting up a professional printmaking studio, Djumbunji Press for the indigenous artists of Far North Queensland.

In 2010 Dian has returned to the Sunshine Coast and Firebox Print Studio, where he is working on a large project for Papunya Tula Artists. Throughout this, Dian has maintained his own art practice, exhibiting in national and international arenas and his work is included in a number of collections.

Dian is experienced in all print media and often uses the juxtaposition of a few different styles and techniques in his own practice. These include lithography, intaglio (etching, engraving and mezzotint), relief printing, monoprinting, etc.
