William Blandowski

William Blandowski was born in Prussia and was educated at the Royal Prussian Cadets, followed by the Tarnowitz Mining School and then the University of Berlin. He arrived in Adelaide on 14 September 1848 and immediately set out to explore and record the surrounding countryside. He travelled overland to Forest Creek in 1851, where like most colonialist's he searched for gold, it appears with some success. In early 1853 he left for Melbourne to pursue a more academic career. He helped found the Geological Society of Victoria (1852), establish the Museum of Geology and was later appointed zoologist in charge of the museum in April 1854. He again continued extensive expeditions around Victoria, till 1857, whereupon his scientific papers caused controversies with his colleagues. He left Melbourne in March 1859 for Germany, were he attempted unsuccessfully to publish his Australian work.
