Roy Fluke

Born in London in 1921, Roy Fluke was brought to Australia in 1926. He studied art part-time at the East Sydney Technical College c.1941. While serving in the army from 1941 to 1946 he lost his left leg, and after de-mobilisation resumed his studies with the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Scheme. Fluke worked part-time teaching and in television. In 1960 he joined the staff at the National Art School.

Chiefly a painter, he made about 20 linocuts since 1950. He also works extensively in monotypes.

Fluke was represented in the Bicentennial exhibition The Face of Australia. Awards won include several regional art prizes between 1954 and 1961; the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales Modern industrial prize (shared with H. Flugelman), 1958; and the Sulman prize, 1963. His work is represented in the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
