Abstract

This vibrant and innovative exhibition showcases the recent work of seven contemporary printmakers who have investigated a diverse range of techniques including etchings, relief printing, digital technology and cyanotypes. Featured in the exhibition are recent works by emerging and mid-career artists including Jazmina Cininas, Rona Green, Rebecca Mayo, Megan McPherson, Susan Pickering, Heather Shimmen and Sophia Szilagyi documenting the vitality and diversity of contemporary print practice in Australia.

Jazmina Cininas’ distinctive and intricate reduction linocuts explore her ongoing fascination with werewolf mythology, referencing her Lithuanian cultural heritage and traditional and contemporary werewolf folklore. Jazmina is currently undertaking a residency as part of the Shell Fremantle Print Award Artist in Residence programme, in conjunction with a solo exhibition The Girlie Werewolf Project: Dingo Variation at the Fremantle Arts Centre.

Rona Green is the winner of this years Swan Hall Print Acquisitive Award. Her witty and humorous digital prints investigate the darker side of the human psyche, depicting the multifaceted personality of her pets, which are a constant source of inspiration.

Rebecca Mayo has created an impressive series of intimate hand coloured cyanotypes exploring personal issues and relationships.

Susan Pickering’s evocative and mysterious etchings have been developed from a series of different states of the same plate made in consecutive months, documenting moments in time from November to February. Her images ambiguously suggest layers of meaning found in music, poetry and the visual arts through rhythmic patterning and surfaces.

Megan McPherson’s quiet, contemplative works combine relief printing with digital technology and silk thread, documenting trees and grasses observed by the artist in suburban Melbourne.

Heather Shimmen’s imaginative linocuts portray the lives of both infamous and famous females, exploring the intricate nature of this relief printing process.

Sophia Szilagyi’s digital prints explore the notion of doubles, shadows and fairytales and the forces of good and evil. [PJP media]
