Remarks

Frances Derham

Born in Melbourne of Irish parents, Frances Derham studied at the National Gallery School and at the Swinburne Technical College from 1911 to 1913. Her major study was sculpture, but she learnt stencil cutting from Stanley Tompkins, and it was this that was to be an influence on her printmaking. She was introduced to the linocut technique in 1921 by Ethel Spowers, who was a close friend. Many of her linocuts which she produced into the l940s had aboriginal motifs. From 1937 to 1940 she attended the George Bell School. Frances Derham was for many years a teacher and is well known for her enlightened approach to pre-school education and art. She died in 1987.
