Remarks

Fred Cress

Born in Poona, India 1938, Fred Cress moved to England in 1948 and studied at the Birmingham College of Arts from 1954 to 1959. He migrated to Australia in 1962, first settling in Melbourne where he taught at Caulfield Institute of Technology and Prahran Institute of Technology.

Regarding his printmaking Cress notes:
'Printmaking is not a central activity for me although I seemed to have made quite a few - a fact which surprises me as I only make them when asked. The first person to do so was David Rankin when he started Port Jackson Press in the mid-1970s. He used Max Miller as his etcher/printer. I travelled from Melbourne to Sydney and gave it a go with Max guiding me all the way.

Since then I've worked using lithography with Andrew Purches in London, Michael Woolworth in Paris. Frans Baetens in Auckland and Neil Leveson, John Loane, Martin King in Melbourne. Etchings with Di Fogwell and Berkeley Editions and with Meg Buchanen in Canberra; Diana Davidson and James Whitington in Sydney.

Screenprints with Kristin Coburn and, most notably, Michelle Perry both in Sydney'. [http://www.fredcress.com/pages/index.]
