Jane Messenger awarded Harold Wright Scholarship to British Museum. - Wednesday, 1 December 2004Jane Messenger, the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings & Photographs is the winner of this year’s prestigious Harold Wright Scholarship to study at the British Museum in London. The Harold Wright Scholarship, offered annually through the University of Melbourne, gives the recipient privileged access to research the world’s largest and finest print collection. Ms Messenger will undertake intensive study in London from July to December 2005 to trace the development of the Western print tradition and develop her print connoisseurship. Ms Messenger commenced as the Gallery’s Assistant Curator of Prints, Drawings & Photographs in November 2002 and was recently promoted to the rank of Associate Curator. She curated the Gallery’s highly successful exhibition Japanese Prints: Images from the Floating World (2004) and was author of the accompanying book. She was the co-ordinating curator in Adelaide for the Gallery’s current Australians in Hollywood exhibition touring from the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra. [AGSA press release]

Ways of seeing Australia by Australian printmakers. - Tuesday, 1 June 2004 A review of Surface Tension an exhibition of Australian prints recently held in New York has appeared in Asian Art News (May/June 2004). In her introduction the author Carmel Wallace notes "The world of contemporary Australian printmaking is alive and well across the land. To understand the extraordinary complexity of their nation Australian print artists have adopted a great diversity of voices and imagery. A concern for the enviroment and a search for a personel cultural identity are at the heart of many artists work."

From Paris with love. - Monday, 24 May 2004 From Paris with love: The graphic arts in France 1880s-1950s opened at the National Gallery of Victoria International on 6 April 2004. The exhibition and catalogue by Alisa Bunbury showcase the NGVs judicially seected aquisitions of French prints from Impressionism to the School of Paris (the ealiest acquisition is from 1914). Beautifully hung, the exhibition also included a number of Japanese prints. The 112 page catalogue is informative and well illustrated.

Elizabeth Parsons (1831-1897). - Thursday, 13 May 2004 The Geelong Gallery exhibition More than a Memory, the art of Elizabeth Parsons opened on 10 April 2004. Parsons, one of the first professional artists to work in Victoria, was both a successful exhibitor of watercolours and drawings, and teacher. In 1882 she published two volumes titled Drawing book of Australian landscape, each illustrated with eight lithographed images. The exhibtion is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue by Veronica Filmer

Ted Egan AO to launch Warmun prints. - Monday, 3 May 2004 His Honour Mr Ted Egan AO Administrator of the Northern Territory will launch a delux suite of etchings by emerging Aboriginal artists from Warmun on Tuesday May 11 2004 at The Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. The prints were produced at Northern Editions, Charles Darwin University, Darwin.

Silk Cut Award for Linocut prints 2004 - Thursday, 15 January 2004Entries for the Silk Cut Award for linocut prints will close on 18 June 2004. See www.silkcutlino.com for entry details. The award was introduced in 1995 to encourage Australian printmakers to produce prints by the very simple linocut technique. The 2004 Grand Aquisitive Award gives the recipiant a travel package to Amsterdam or a $5,000 prize.

Focus on artists' books. - Thursday, 1 January 2004Artspace Mackay is holding a weekend of events (beginning 6 February) that focus on the artists' book in Australia. There will be a forum on the Friday to discuss issues in the creation, collection and care of artists' books, as well as four exhibiions: Bruno Letti: Artists books 1982-2003; Tracing the echo; Artists' books and folios by Dianne Logley; Image as text - text as image: A survey of book works by Ken Orchard and Presence: prints and artists by Sandra Rose and Elizabeth Lamont.
