Introduction

The National Gallery of Australia opened in 1982 in Canberra, the Nation's capital city. Within this park-like National precinct, which includes Parliament House, there is a range of cultural institutions - the National Portrait Gallery, the National Library of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, the National Archives of Australia, the National Screen and Sound Archive and the National Museum of Australia (including the Gallery of Aboriginal Australia).

The Gallery houses an extensive collection of art from Australia, (including Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander), Asia, Europe and the Americas.

The collection of Australian Prints, Posters and Illustrated Books is a sub-department of Australian Art. This collecting area is substantially financed from The Gordon Darling Australasian Print Fund. This website, an initiative of the Fund, has been established to fulfil the Gallery's objectives to: 
   
   'Encourage understanding, knowledge and enjoyment of the visual arts by providing access to and information about works of art locally, nationally and internationally.'
